Winter Storm Precautions - 2/5/2015

Dear Members of the Columbia Community,

Unlike a routine snow event, the most recent winter storm that hit the New York area with snow, freezing rain and gusty winds have created a unique set of challenging conditions around the City as well as on campus, including slippery roads and sidewalks and falling ice and snow.

Columbia University Facilities has been working hard around the clock to help ensure the well-being of students, faculty, staff and visitors, clearing snow and ice on and around campus as swiftly as possible, doing our best to keep temperatures at a safe and comfortable level and even putting up sidewalk protection where needed.

With another winter storm forecast to begin this weekend and last into early next week, we wanted to remind you that there are a few things you can do to help:

• Be careful. Safety is our priority - use caution when navigating around campus.
• Be in touch. If you see an unsafe condition, please immediately call our Facilities Services Center at 212-854-2222. We are open 24/7 and are prepared to handle your calls.
• Take precautions before you leave each day. By making sure all windows are closed, leaving all radiator valves and fan coils on, clearing clothing and furniture away from heaters and making sure all faucets are off, you will help save energy and reduce the risk of frozen pipes and the damage it can cause.

We appreciate your support and patience as we work together to keep our campus safe, beautiful and functional. Please stay safe and warm.
